The Chateau Margaux vineyard stretches 87 hectares (approx. 215 acres) and continues to impress with superior releases. The Chateau Margaux 2005 is a magnificent blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot from what is considered a truly great, pure vintage.

In the glass, the Chateau Margaux 2005 wine impresses with the intensity of its color. This wine offers incredible finesse on the nose, along with a grace and depth that can be attributed to its terroir. The wine exudes distinctive characters from the Margaux terroir: finesse, grace, and depth. Prominent fragrances include blackcurrants, blackberry jam and bitter cherries, along with hints of soft leather. This wine is also quite powerful, with an exceptional concentration and harmony. The perfect balance achieved by this Chateau Margaux 2005 wine is due in large part to Cabernet Sauvignon, which occupies the majority of the blend. In the 2005 vintage, grapes of this varietal reached optimal maturity without the alcoholic degree surpassing 13. The beautiful acidity and tannic structure gives this Chateau Margaux 2005 wine a remarkable ability to age in the bottle.

A seductively delicate and balanced Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classe
The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, Chateau Margaux is one of the Grands Crus that exemplifies the legend of fine Bordeaux wines throughout the world. In 1855, the chateau was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classe and was the only one of the four contenders to have obtained an impeccable twenty out of twenty score. Following the acquisition of the estate by André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, Chateau Margaux began a new chapter in its history. Elevating the Chateau Margaux Grand Vin to the highest level, he reintroduced the chateau’s Second Vin, Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, which was produced from 1908. Following in her father's footsteps and due to his premature passing, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took over the running of her family’s estate with the drive and determination to preserve the rank of Chateau Margaux, which has become a true Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognisable by its Neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines are among the greatest in the world.

The vineyard

Chateau Margaux’ vineyard is distinctive due to its rare and unique terroir, situated on a small gravel hill. The estate's grape varieties are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, and also includes Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s clay-limestone soils result in legendary vintages, with a sophisticated and sensual appearance, truly representative of the Margaux appellation.

The vintage

A cold, dry winter preceded a month of April whose cool, wet conditions delayed budburst and slowed down the development of the vines. The milder and warmer conditions from the 1st of May onwards favored a rapid and even flowering period. From July 10th until the end of the harvest (October 14th), a particularly dry period had a heterogeneous impact on the plots. Despite these extreme weather conditions, the variation between hot days and cool nights favored the development of the tannins and the aromatic palette all while preserving a beautiful freshness. 2009 is one of the great vintages of the estate.

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (87%)

Merlot (9%)

Cabernet Franc (2%)

Petit Verdot (2%).
